MLB Day 26 – Pirates’ Doumit Dominates The Late Innings Again Over Brewers

April 29, 2010

Pittsburgh Pirates’ $3.6 Million Dollar catcher, Ryan Doumit, dominated the late innings with a “Game” tying 9th inning HR and a 13th inning block at the plate to win 6-5 over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Doumit, who received over a $1 Million raise from 09′, is one of the Pirates’ greatest investments of value for production.

If that is home plate to Edmonds right hand area it is most likely his own fault in being tagged out, from that angle it looks like he could have had a much better chance of being safe had he taken his whole body to the far right area of the plate and attempted to tag home plate with his left hand, I would like to have viewd the whole play from the third base side, maybe I would see it differently.
We were taught which I also teach that when the opportunity arises we slide away from the tag and get our upper half down in an attempt to evade the tag.
These players still do not get it that one simply cannot take that futile little league great big long step and beat the ball to first base in an attempt to be safe, I cannot remember who it was but there was a picture in our paper the other day, the ball was in the first baseman’s glove and the runners front foot was still one good step and about three feet in the air from the base.
Another one of my pet peeves is sliding head first into first base in a futile attempt to be safe, What I call is a very stupid thing to do, fingers, hands, elbows shoulders , heads and necks take a beating with this dumb piece of sliding.
In a very close situation at first base where the first baseman has to go up or somewhat out of position, even in the baseline where the runner can get down safely without being tagged I will have them get flat down to the foul side of the line and make the first baseman come clear down to the ground to tag them, I do not like to see a runner run into a tag out when getting flat down to the foul side of the line will successfully evade a tag out.
Just thought I would get my two cents in.

Great points. There is an to sliding past the catcher. I love to slide away from the base and roll over to tag the plate if needed.
